Thanks to many readers well wishes, despite that my delivery wasn't as smooth as expected. I had a complicated delivery which landed me to an emergency Cesarean after going through 20 hours of 1st stage labour.
20th December - At about 10am, my water bag burst with no sign of contraction. Jeff took me to the delivery suite and after examination my gynae felt that I should be induced to avoid complications to baby. Therefore I was given a pill to insert through my virginal to help assist dilation. It was suppose to work but still after few hours, there was no sign of contraction at all. I was later given another dose of IV medicine to again assist my dilation of my cervix. By then I had tubs and monitors all over me, 2 monitors on my tummy to monitor baby's heart beat and contraction. On my left wrist was IV drip and on my right was blood pressure monitor. At that time, I had laid in one position on the delivery bed for about 6 hours. My back started stiffening, my body and arms numb... it was unbearable. But then I was still very hopeful awaiting for Natalie to arrive.
I heard cries and screams from the other delivery suite, it was voices of mothers pushing their babies. I looked at Jeff and he smiled back at me, by then it was already evening time. I had been in the hospital for 8 hours already and still no sign of contraction. At about 9pm, GA came and gave me my first dose of Epidural. The IV was suppose to do very well on dilation and they expect me to have contraction pain by then. Staff nurse said if every thing goes smoothly, I should be able to go into 2nd stage of labour and by 7am my baby should be out, which is 21st December. That gave us hope again, and we waited and waited.
Though I was on Epidural, they had attached another monitor on my right arms for me to control the dosage of epidural I needed. But I need to press that stupid button for a dose and it will take 10 minutes to work.... there was a few instance that I didn't press on time and the pain almost took away my soul...
21st December 2007 - By 7am Gynae came, my cervix opened about 4 cm only but Dr said baby's head had descended. She told me I had tried very hard and it would be very dangerous if I couldn't dilate on time. Doctor gave me another few hours to try for natural birth. By 10am my Dr was already wearing her surgical robe, and told me that I need to go for emergency Cesarean if not both me and baby would be in danger. Fear clouded my thoughts and I teared. That very instance my mind was filled with doubts... what would happen to baby, would I die... so on...
Jeff called home and told my mum about my condition, she was the second person to cry when she heard that. He kept consoling me, Dr and nurses gave me assurance that it would turn out well. The GA came again and gave me double dose of epidural to prepare me for Cesarean. Very shortly I was transfered from delivery bed and pushed to the operating theatre. Scrub nurses carried me onto the surgical table, my arms were straightened out, I felt that I was being crucified. The side effects of epidural came immediately, I was shivering, teeth clattering, trembling non-stop throughout the operation. I even vomited on the surgical table while they were busy cutting me up.
Though I couldn't feel the pain, I was able to feel the push and pull action done by Drs while they were cutting me up. There were many pushing done on my tummy by my Dr, believe to be an action to get baby out. My mind was spinning, I was seeing stars, had to cope with the tremors, deal with the vomiting and still wondering if baby was out already. Finally within 5 minutes I heard a loud cry, baby was out. They shaft her ass close to my face to confirm her gender, later on brought her back to let me have the 2nd look at her. I was told she weighed 3.32kg and 50cm with 33cm head circumference.
I didn't feel joyous... I thought I would cry, thought I would be touched... no... I didn't. I was still in shock. Later part of the surgery took a longer stage, suddenly my Dr told me that she found a fibroid, and wanted to seek my consent to remove it. I couldn't stop trembling, but Dr removed it anyway. Sigh might as well... Second part of the surgery, stitching me back so on took another 20 to 30 minutes... but it seem like ages. By the time it ended, it was already close to 1pm.
From 20th December 10am till 21st December 1pm.... Luckily both baby and me are healthy and well. Later on I was told that though Natalie's head has descended down, she was facing down instead of up. That led to the difficult birth.
It was such a night mare... Don't ask me when will I be having a next baby, I need to overcome this phobia... I was only discharged on the 24th December, which everyone was happily celebrating Christmas, 5 full days in the hospital....
